Nomenclature of Alcohols
We have been talking about alcohols as functional groups for a while now. We are currently looking at reactions of alkenes to produce alcohols, and soon we will be looking at reactions of alcohols. It's time we learn how to name them! (Yay!)
Alcohols have priority over the other functional groups we have named so far (e.g. alkenes, alkynes, halides). This means, that the alcohol group will get the lowest number on the parent chain. The name of alcohols will end in "-ol."
